  • Easy to identify estate planning buckets that prompt you
SideDrawer is designed around six main estate planning drawers. These are meant to help guide you through the estate planning process. We plan to launch additional drawers in 2019.
  • A summary of all of the activities that have taken place
Whether you’ve invited a Designate or generated a custom report. All of your notifications will be listed here. Looking for another notification? Let us know in the feedback form.
  • Easily access all of the Designates and Professionals that you’ve added throughout SideDrawer.
You can also use this as a starting point to add a Designate or a Professional into a specific item of your estate.

  • Manage all of your account settings
Need to change your password or email address? Access all of your account settings easily throughout the app.
  • Generate a report that incorporates all the individual items you entered in the various drawers.
The report can be emailed to you, or any accepted Designate to keep electronically or as a printed hard copy. It is also a great tool to use if you’re planning on meeting an Estate Lawyer to create a Will, or a Financial Planner to prepare a financial roadmap for you and your family.

Adding a designate

This is the same process in each Drawer, and is the same for adding a Professional.

You can import a contact from your Address Book, or type in the details, of someone that you would like to inform about your Will, Life Insurance, Investment, or any item within your Drawers. It can be a spouse/partner, a parent, a child, a sibling, whoever you wish. In order for the Designate to receive any communication from SideDrawer, or to be a sent a copy of your custom SideDrawer report, they have to accept their role as a Designate.

Note that a Designate is not the same as an Executor/Trustee or a Beneficiary, which are formal roles prescribed by Law.

Understanding Will and Life Insurance Drawers

These two Drawers are designed in a similar manner.

You can upload a PDF of your Will or Life Insurance, or you can take photos of key pages if you have a printed copy. Maybe all you need to capture is the law firm that put your will together. You don’t need to type your life insurance policy number, just take a photo of it! The whole idea is to reduce the time it would take to prep all these important things and guide you along the way.

Complete the drawer by adding a description, assigning a designate (see description above) and adding contact information for a lawyer or insurance agent.

Don’t have a Will / Life Insurance? This feature will be coming soon! You will able to browse through listings of Estate Lawyers, Financial Planners and Life Insurance Agents that would like to offer their services to help you create your estate/financial plan. The best part you will be able to use SideDrawer’s custom report to share your estate with the Professional to be used for a quote, which saves you significant time during the interview process.

Each document or image is encrypted and uploaded to our servers where only you have access. Other than where required by Law, no one has access to the encrypted documents.

Understanding the Real Estate and Investment Drawers

Photos / Maps – here are some examples of what types of photos you could take:

  • If you have a rental property, can take an image of the property so your Estate can easily identify which one it is. Use the Maps feature to quickly locate the address without having to type in all the fields.
  • If you have a robo-advisor investment account that is digital only, take a photo of the URL. If you’re familiar with a physical office, you can enter in the address or leave this Map entry blank.
  • If you have an investment account at a bank or a firm, take a photo of the bank or investment firm’s login page so your Estate can distinguish where your assets are held. If you know the physical address, you can use the Map to locate where you may have held a meeting in the past.

Complete the drawer by adding a name and short description, assigning a designate (see description above) and adding contact information for a real estate agent or Financial Advisor. Adding these professionals are key since they will have more knowledge and can help your family or your Estate either transfer the assets, liquidate them, or just provide more knowledge about the item. This Professional’s contact information will appear at the top of your custom SideDrawer Report, should you create one.

Understanding the Bank Drawer

Here you can select where you may have various bank accounts. There is no photo option as we don’t want sensitive bank account information to be shared. The banks and your estate/financial planners only need to know where you have accounts, and how many you may have.

Description – you can enter a description of bank account – chequing, savings, etc, or any other information you may want.

Add Designate – as described above.

Add Banking Professional / Accountant – similar to adding a Designate, this is where you can import from your Address Book, or type in the details of the Professional (Banking Professional, or Accountant) who may have more knowledge and can help your family or your Estate access the funds you have in your various bank accounts. The purpose of the Accountant is to help with consolidating your bank accounts into one place. This Professional’s contact information will appear at the top of your custom SideDrawer Report, should you create one.

Put it in your Shoebox

Here you can capture miscellaneous personal possessions you may have.

  •  You have a piece of Art kept at your rental property that you love. Can upload an image of it,
and add the address of your rental property.
  • You have a piece of jewellery you want to leave behind for your granddaughter (or another
special person), and it’s kept in the safety deposit box. You can upload a photo and enter the
address of where your safety deposit box is.
  • You have a skateboard at home you’d like your friend to have. Upload a picture of your board
    and enter your home’s address.

Recipient – similar to adding a Designate, you can import a contact from your Address Book, or type in
the details, of someone that you would like to receive this item, and you can enter the reason you would
like them to have this. Note, a Recipient is NOT a Beneficiary, and your Will has final say over your asset
distribution. So you can use these as a guide to help your Estate or Financial Planner to prepare or
update your Will.

Add Designate – as described above.
